Ambedkar Jayanti 2019 | Festivals of India

 

Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated in India every year on 14th April as the birthday of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. His full name is Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and is popularly acknowledged as Babasaheb. He was born on April 14, 1891 at MHOW in Madhya Pradesh. He was the main planner of Indian constitution and therefore also known as “Father of Indian constitution”. So, Indians celebrate his birthday to venerate his contribution to India.

Dr. Ambedkar was a person who had done so much work for the upliftment of lower people of the society and had dedicated his entire life for this purpose. So, he is considered as great social reformer by Indians. He had also played a very significant role in freedom struggle of India.

He was the first untouchable person from India who completed his college education. He pursued higher education from United States and England and got a law degree. After practicing law for some time, he started publishing journals about political and social rights for untouchable people in India. Some famous books that he wrote for the upliftment of poor people are ‘The Annihilation of caste’, ‘Who are Shudras’, etc. While doing this, he also joined Indian freedom struggle and founded ‘Indian labour party’.

After getting independence, Indian government appointed Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as first law minister of free India and the chairman of Indian constitution drafting committee. Dr. Ambedkar died on 26th December 1956 and was honoured with Bharat Ratna in 1990.

Ambedkar Jayanti is a public holiday all over the India and people celebrate this day in remembrance of this great soul. So many cultural activities are organised by different organisations on this day. Both private and government sector celebrate this day and also organize prayers and memorial speeches.
