Dussehra Vijyadashmi Festival is one of the principle celebrations in the major parts of the country. With great fanfare it is celebrated in Varanasi, Kullu, Mysore. In these parts of the country this festival is known as Dussera. On the other side in West Bengal this festival is called vijyadashmi. It is the most popular festival allover in India. It is purely one of the Hindu festivals which are celebrated to mark the defeat of Ravana. For the people of West Bengal this festival symbolizes the triumph of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura. During the nine days preceding Dussehra, Ramlila is played in many places. On the tenth day which is called Dussehra, the Ravana, Meghnath and Kumbhakarna are set to fire.

On the day of Dussehra Vijyadashmi Festival Lord Ram killed Ravana, the great demon and king of Lanka. According to the puranas, in this day Goddess Durga killed and defeated the Buffalo demon Mahishasura. This festival is significant from the point of view of Power of Female. During this time of festival people want to decorate the entrance gate with flower studded strings and torans. At evening all the villagers cross the borders and worship the tree called shami. This puja varies from place to place and region to region. It is totally influenced by local religious beliefs and myth.

In northern India this Ramlila is the main attraction where all the stages of life of Lord Rama are acted. In Punjab Dussehra Vijyadashmi Festival includes the period of fasting. In Gujarat this festival is celebrated with Garba dance in evening and night. Around an earthen lamp all the women dance while singing devotional song. In Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamilnadu people exchange sweets, clothes and coconut with each other during this festival. This is a festival in which people can have a great time to spend together.
