Lohri Festival 2019 – The Festival of Punjab

Lohri is the main festival of the state of Punjab in India. Punjabi people mainly celebrate this Lohri festival. Every year on 13th January the people of Punjabi caste celebrate this festival. The festival which is originated from Punjab is mainly celebrated in Punjab. But the entire nation also takes part in the celebration. Outside India wherever the Punjabis obtain their livelihood also celebrated Lohri at this time. The season is winter at the time of the celebration of Lohri. So, the atmosphere which is cool and chilled is liked by everyone.

At the time of celebrating Lohri festival, the family members of each and every family light fire. Then they sit around the fire. After that all the members of a family form a circle around the fire. Then they start revolving around it. This is called ‘Agni Ke Phere’. While moving around the fire the family members murmur a specific Mantra. This mantra is known as ‘Gayatri Mantra’. A mixture of mainly 5 edible elements is sacrificed by the people with each round. After the completion of each round all the members put the mixture in the fire. At that time they loudly say the word ‘Swaha’. This sacrifice which is known as ‘Aahuti’ to Agnidev (God of Hindus) is repeated by them for 7 times.

When the ritual is completed, the elder members of the family sing chorus, kids start dancing and playing. Everyone enjoys well because the weather is very beautiful. Then the family members enjoy the taste of the beautiful mixture which is left behind. This remaining stuff which is considered as ‘Prasad’ is treated with respect because they consider it as the fruit from the god, named Agni Deva. In Indian culture people treat marriage as a religious act. People assume the newly wedded wife as a blessing from God. So, the families, related to newly wedded couples celebrate the festival Lohri with great enthusiasm. They also throw huge parties. Though the tradition of the Lohri festival is quite old, yet people of today celebrate the festival quite enthusiastically and with same respect.
