He was born on 17th September, 1915in Pandharpur, located in the Madhya Pradesh state of India. His mother’s name was Zainab and father’s name was Fida. His mother deceased when he was three years old and after that his father remarried and moved to Indore. MF Hussain completed his primary education in Indore only. Since very early age he was very much associated with the paintings. In his childhood he learnt the calligraphy art and also became expert in geometric forms of the Kulfic Khat. Hussain also learnt to write poems during his childhood. He moved to the Mumbai city when he was 20 years old. He took admission in the Sir J. J. School of Arts, Mumbai with the aim to become an artist. He studied there for one year. In the year 1941, he married Fazilla and had five children. Two daughters Raisa and Aqueela, and three sons Mustafa, Shamshad and Owais. Mustafa is a restaurateur and the other two are painters.

For earning his livelihood M.F. hussain started his painting career in the year 1937, by painting the hoardings for cinemas. Initially the struggling days of this legendary artist were quite tough.Slowly his earning increased and he went to different parts of Gujrat like baroda, Surat and Ahemdabad to paint different landscapes. He also tried various other jobs like designing toys in the toy factory etc.
At the annual exhibition held in Mumbai in the year 1947, at Bombay Art Society, Hussain’s painting ‘Sunhera Sansaar’ was awarded and this lead to Hussains entry in the list of the best painters and artists. He was invited by Francis Newton Souzah in the year 1946 to unite with the Bombay Progressive Artists Group, a group which was founded to discover new slangs of Indian art. This lead to Hussain’s exposure to the great artistic work of Oskar Kokoschka and Emil Nolde and he had a very convincing and persuasive influence of their work and as a result gave very outstanding works like’Zameen and Man”Re Between The Spider And The Lamp’, etc.Later he visited Delhi and had a happenstance with Indian miniature paintings and ancient Mathura Sculpture. He then incorporated ideas both from Indian as well western art and this fusion became a turning point in his career. He gained publicity in the year 1948 and 1950 when he started a series of exhibitions which were really very successful and appreciated by all art lovers.In the year 1952, M.F. Hussain organized his first solo exhibition in Bombay. Lalit Kalaa Akademi nominated M.F. Hussain as an eminent artist in the year 1954. And he won the national award at the same the next year at the first national exhibition of the Lalit Kala Akademi.
