The most celebrated Festival of Kerala is Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, and it is held in the month of August or September. The festival is an assortment of fables and authenticity, secured in the ethnic domain of Kerala. These ten days of Onam festival, are observed by the entire Kerala Society is in a remarkably festive mood, honoring the long-gone times of prosperity, impartiality and virtue under the auspicious reign of Mahabali.

All festivals, of different forms and faiths are celebrated by the people together, regardless of their cast, beliefs or color. The Onam Pookalam, drawn in the front yard of a Hindu or a non-Hindu family during Onam festival forms a nice sight. At times competitions are also held to promote picturesque portrayals of athapookalam. KALA Pookalam held in 2010 is one such example. Pookalam’s extent varies from 2 to 3 feet.

Many people can help make one pookalam and usually women or girls do it. This turns out to be a nice way of passing time for them. A proper athapookalam takes about 90 minutes for completion.
