Paush Purnima 2019: Sunday, 21 January

Purnima means the full moon day and believed to be a very auspicious day in Hindu religion. Paush Purnima is the day of full moon that falls in Paush month according to Hindu calendar.

Magh mela snan starts in Allahabad on this day at Prayag Triveni Sangam and therefore this day is considered as very auspicious. It is believed to be very fortunate to have bath in this mela and therefore so many people participate in this magh mela snan.

According to North Indian calendars, it is the last day of Paush month but it is the 15th day of Paush month according to other calendars that are followed in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, etc.

According to the belief of Hindu religion, it is very auspicious to take bath in punya snan at Triveni Sangam or at any other location of holy rivers like Ganga, Brahmaputra, etc. It is said that by taking bath in these rivers, a person can get rid of all his sins.

Festivals that are celebrated on Paush Purnima are Shakambari Jayanti and Shakambari Purnima. It is the last day of Paush navaratri.
